Skin Care and
Magnets: Wound Healing
A wound is an injury, whereby there is a break in the integrity of the
skin or any other body tissue caused by tearing, cutting, piercing,
burning, and infection among others.
It is estimated that more than 5 million patients in the United States
have chronic wounds
Wounds can be classified into two types –based on their causative factor
Acute wounds
- Wounds caused by surgical procedure
- Penetrating or piercing wounds such as those caused by a knife or gunshot
- Avulsion Injury – a forcible tearing away of a body part, or a surgical detachment of a body part (amputation)
- Compression injury
- Shearing injury (when individual is dragged rather than lifted from a bed)
- Burn Injury
- Skin laceration, scratching, gash or cut
- Wounds caused by bites (animal or human)
Chronic wounds
- Arterial or venous ulcers
- Pressure ulcers
- Diabetic ulcers
Successful treatment of wound relies on many factors. Wounds tend to
heal well if: they are clean, free of dead tissue and germs; they are
moist; they have normal blood supply.
The way each of these factors is achieved is reliant upon the wound care
given. To maintain cleanliness wounds are cleaned with saline solutions
and may sometimes need to be debrided to remove dead tissue. Apply a
moist dressing that is not constrictive.
Alternative Treatments for wound care include: acupuncture, herbal
application on wound dressings as well as magnetic therapy.
Studies have shown that electrical stimulation via acupuncture around
wound significantly helped the wound to heal. Scientists theorize that
it is due to increase circulation to the wound and positive effect on
wound contracture.
Herbal remedies can be applied to the wound for direct restoration and also
taken orally to aid in wound healing
Treatments to increase peripheral blood flow in the region of a pressure
ulcer or incontinence-related skin lesion would result in improved
oxygen supply to the hypoxic tissues, more efficient removal of carbon
dioxide and other metabolic wastes, a richer supply of nutrients
delivered to the cells, and a faster removal of cellular debris from the
sites of tissue necrosis. The resulting clinical benefit would be an
increase in wound healing. Clinical studies show that magnetic therapy
enhances the peripheral blood flow thereby facilitating wound healing.
