OVERVIEW OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a functional gastrointestinal disorder in which the muscles of the large intestines become overly active making the colon overly sensitive to any matter within it, such as stool, gas, and mucus. Unlike inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome does not cause inflammation or changes in the tissues of the intestines, nor does it cause permanent damage to colon or increase the risk of colon cancer. It is a disorder that can be controlled by some, however it can be incapacitating to other individuals. IBS can be the cause of a person not being able to work, attend social functions, or even travel short distances.

INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE
About 20-30% of Americans suffer from IBS at one point in their lives. It is currently not understood why but twice the number of women have IBS as do men. More time is lost from work and school due to IBS than any other medical problem other than the common cold. IBS significantly affects activities of daily living and the personal and sexual relationship of a great number of married and cohabitating couples.

CAUSES
Though the cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is unknown researchers have come up with some theories as to the factors that might be involved. Some posit that the colon of an IBS sufferer is particularly sensitive to stress or certain foods. Others theorize that the immune system may be involved. And since more women than men have IBS, hormonal factors have been seen as contributing causes. Stress has been shown to be a trigger or an exacerbating feature but not a cause.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME INCLUDE:
  • Abdominal pain and cramping that may be relieved by a bowel movement
  • Bloating and gas
  • Mucus in the stools
  • Diarrhea or constipation or alternating between both
  • Diarrhea that occurs early morning or right after eating
  • Alteration of stool frequency and consistency
  • Urgency to move bowels even after a bowel movement

CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT:
Conventional treatment includes several types of medications aimed at relieving symptoms. See below.
  • Treatment may also include adding fiber to the diet, as well maintaining a food diary, quitting smoking and an exercise program.

Medications:
  • Laxatives, antispasmodics, antidepressants, muscle relaxants or a combination of some are utilized.
immunosuppressive drugs.
  • There is a medication called Lotronex used for women who have predominately diarrhea form of IBS. This drug has been approved once again by the Food and Drug Administration but with severe restrictions due to serious side effects.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT:
 • Magnetic Therapy
Magnetic therapy has been shown to alleviate some of the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome as well as some of the underlying factors.

A frequent symptom associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome is spasms of the colon. Magnetic therapy has been shown to be effective in preventing and alleviate muscle spasms. The magnetic energy seems to interfere with the contractions of the colon muscles thus relieving the spasms and the pain associated with it.

Drinking magnetized water, allows the magnetic energy to be absorbed into the intestines whose main function is absorption of nutrients. As the magnetic energy permeates the intestinal wall, inflammation is reduced.
