OVERVIEW OF CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The median nerve is housed by the carpal tunnel which is a narrow pathway made of bone and ligaments at the base of the hand. Thickening of tendon sheaths and arthritic changes at the wrist can reduce the size of the tunnel causing pressure on the nerve and therefore pain and discomfort.
INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects approximately 1% of the general population and 5% of the workers who engage in repetitive use of their hands and wrists. This syndrome is responsible for the highest number of work days lost than any other work related injury. OSHA – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has deemed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome the most common and costly occupational health problem.
CAUSES
The cause of carpal tunnel syndrome is often unknown; however, any condition that causes pressure on the median nerve of the wrist can result in carpal tunnel syndrome. These conditions include: pregnancy, diabetes, arthritis, obesity and hypothyroidism among others. Trauma and repetitive motion can also be the cause of carpal tunnel syndrome.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME INCLUDE:
• Numbness and tingling in the hand and fingers
especially the thumb and index finger.
• Radiating pain from wrist to shoulder up
the arm, or down to the palm and fingers.
• Weakness in the hands and wrist
• Loss of fine motor skills resulting in
clumsiness
• Stiffness of the hand upon awakening
• Usually affects one hand more than the
other
CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT: Conventional treatment usually includes physical therapy, splints or braces, non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, cortisone injections, surgery – carpal tunnel release.
Medications: • Analgesics or pain killers such as Tylenol or NSAIDS which are usually given in conjunction with other drugs to improve their effectiveness.
• Antidepressants which can also help with sleep disturbances
• Anti-seizure medications are often effective pain killers
• Muscle relaxants
• Serotonin and Norepinephrine Boosters.
ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT:
• Magnetic Therapy Magnetic therapy can help by reducing the swelling, improving circulation and alleviating pain. Utilizing magnetic wrist braces assists
in keeping the wrist supported and cocked to help prevent further pain, discomfort and damage to the area.
