OVERVIEW OF MIGRAINES
Migraines are an intense, often debilitating type of headache on one or both sides of the head. Various symptoms may accompany the headache including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, increased sensitivity of the eyes to light (photophobia), increased sensitivity to sound (phonophobia), dizziness, blurred vision. In some cases, people experience an “aura” which warns them of an impending migraine.

INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE
About 16-17% of the population in the world has experienced a migraine headache sometime in their lives. Half of those get their first episode before the age of 20 while almost all get it before the age of 50. 10% of children experience migraine headaches. More women than men report symptoms of migraines.

CAUSES
The exact cause of migraines is not known. Researchers have come up with a number of theories as to the cause of Migraine headaches. One theory attributes Migraines to an alteration in the level of certain brain substances causing inflammation. That inflammation brings about swelling of the blood vessels that compress nearby nerve resulting in pain.

Another factor that is believed to play a role is genetics. Scientists posit that people who suffer from migraines have abnormal genes controlling certain functions in the brain cells.

What is known based on clinical studies and patient’s reports is that those afflicted with migraines react to “triggers” which are events or factors that elicit a migraine attack. It is usually a number of triggers that produce a migraine.

Triggers include:
  • Certain foods: Alcohol (especially beer and red wine), caffeine, foods containing nitrates like lunch meats and hot dogs, foods containing MSG, foods containing tyramine like aged cheese, fava beans, soy products and smoked fish, chocolate, and aspartame.
  • Sleep: Too much or too little
  • Hormonal Changes: Fluctuation in estrogen. Migraines are reported immediately before or after the menstrual period, or during pregnancy or menopause.
  • Stress: Anxiety and stress whether at home or at work.
  • Sensory Stimulation: Strong odors (pleasant or unpleasant), loud noises or bright lights.
  • Weather Changes: Including a change in the barometric pressure
  • Physical activity: Intense exercise, extremely passionate sexual activity
  • Medications: Certain drugs can either elicit or worsen migraine attacks

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF MIGRAINES INCLUDE:
There are three types of migraine headaches;
  • Common Migraines
  • Classic Migraines
  • Menstrual Migraines.

Common Migraine
This is the most common type of migraine that lasts 72 hours if not treated, is characterized by moderate to intense throbbing pain made worse by physical activity. This type of migraine does not have an aura associated with it.

Symptoms include:
  • Throbbing pain on one side of the head
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and sound

Classic Migraines
This is a migraine headache characterized by its preceding aura. An aura is a sensory experience that usually occurs within 30 minutes before a migraine develops. These auras can be visual, aural, or olfactory.

Symptoms of auras include:
  • Visual auras include flashing lights, visual hallucination, zigzag lines, and blurred vision
  • Aural auras involve hearing buzzing sounds
  • Olfactory auras include smelling an unreal scent, and tactile auras include tingling sensations in the hands.

Menstrual Migraines
This migraine headache affects women before, during and after their menstruation or during ovulation. Not only does it have regular timing but it is more severe than the regular migraine headache.

Symptoms include:
  • One sided throbbing pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and sound

CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT:
Medications:
For mild migraine headaches there are over the counter pain relievers such as:
     • Tylenol Extra Strength Pain Reliever & Fever Reducer, Caplets
  • NSAIDs
     • Advil Advanced Medicine for Pain, 200mg, Caplets
     • Motrin IB Ibuprofen Pain Reliever/Fever Reducer, 200 mg, Tablets
     • Aleve All Day Strong Pain Reliever, Fever Reducer, Caplet

For moderate to severe migraines
Medications utilized are migraine specific abortive drugs which work by counteracting the cause of the headache. The following medications require a doctor’s prescription.

  • Triptans: Imitrex, Zomix and Maxalt
  • Ergots: Ergomar, Wigraine.
  • Midrin: Acetaminophen + Isometheptene

Serious side effects are: heart attacks and strokes.
These medications should not be taken by those individuals who have had heart attacks or strokes and those who have symptoms of atherosclerosis.

  • Other medications that may be used are narcotics however those tend to be addicting.

Prevention:
  • There are medications used for migraine that are preventative in nature and those include beta-blockers, antidepressants and anticonvulsants.
  • The other facet of treatment of migraine is trigger management. This is of vital importance of in preventing migraine headaches.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT:
  • Magnetic Therapy
Magnetic energy is beneficial in the prevention of migraine headaches as well as shortening the duration of the headache once it has started. Researchers believe that once magnets are positioned around the head magnetic pulses are produced which in turn cause an elevated electrical activity within the brain. This enhanced flow of electricity between neural pathways, stimulates the parts of the brain responsible for serotonin and melatonin production. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter or brain chemical whose main function is regulation of mood, sleep and muscle contractions. Changes in serotonin levels are a key factor in the cause of migraine headaches. As magnetic energy increases the production of serotonin it helps prevent the onset of migraines.

Another benefit to the use of magnetic energy for migraines is its ability to stimulate endorphins production and increase their level in the blood. Endorphins are neurotransmitters or brain chemicals that reduce the perception of pain and produce feeling of euphoria.

Wearing magnetic products will aid in prevention of migraine headaches, however if the migraine already started it is important to place stronger more penetrating magnets to shorten the duration and reduce the pain.
