OVERVIEW OF FIBROMYALGIA
Fibromyalgia is a syndromea set of symptoms that occur together but do not have a known cause. This disorder is characterized by chronic muscular pain: Its most unique feature is the existence of tender points. These are spots that hurt with increased intensity when pressure is applied. Though the pain often mimics arthritis it is totally different since unlike arthritis, many patients with fibromyalgia report associated, irritable bowel syndrome, bladder abnormalities, parasthesias numbness or tingling, migraine headaches, immune system or endocrine system disorders.
Some individuals with fibromyalgia have been noted to have cognitive dsysfunction, while others have been diagnosed with psychiatric and mood disorders.
INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE
Fibromyalgia affects about 2% of the American population. More women than men are affected by fibromyalgia, predominately women of childbearing age.
CAUSES
The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, though some experts believe that it is a complex reaction to stress and may have some genetic disposition.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF FIBROMYALGIA INCLUDE:
Deep muscular pain that may be generalized. Patients may describe the pain as aching, throbbing, stabbing, shooting, or burning.
Incapacitating fatigue.
Fibrofog referring to the inability to concentrate or retain new information.
Sleep disorders characterized by frequent arousals thus causing the inability to get deep restorative sleep.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome characterized by alternating constipation and diarrhea, abdominal pain and distention, as well as
bloating and nausea.
Chronic headaches may be migraine or tension headaches occurring as frequently as twice a week and often more frequently.
CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT: Conventional treatment usually includes medications as well as physical therapy, occupational therapy, trigger point therapy and counseling.
Medications: Analgesics or pain killers such as Tylenol or NSAIDS which are usually given in conjunction with other drugs to improve their effectiveness.
Antidepressants which can also help with sleep disturbances
Anti-seizure medications are often effective pain killers
Muscle relaxants
Serotonin and Norepinephrine Boosters.
ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT:
Magnetic Therapy Though researchers are still baffled by how magnetic therapy works in alleviation of pain, studies have shown significant results. Clinical trials done in a major American university on patients suffering from fibromyalgia garnered positive results. In one study, patients utilizing magnetic pads experienced major reduction in pain intensity levels. In another study, results showed that magnetic therapy decreased the muscle pain associated with fibromyalgia.
